Ipe (spelled ipe and pronounced “ee-pay”), also called Brazilian walnut, is a beautiful exotic wood from South America. Its denser than Jatoba which is saying something! Unfortunately it is a tree that's under threat from over harvesting in the rain forests of the world and on average very few grow per acre so there is a movement around the world to use it less and find alternatives. There is also a black market for the sort after timber used for outdoor construction and flooring as its rot resistant in wet environments up to 75 years. Packed full of oils and tannins to prevent insect and fungal damage.
If you use it in small amounts for bow making like us please make sure it's fsc certified. When ipe trees are responsibly grown in managed forests, the harvested wood gets a stamp of approval from the Forest Stewardship Council (which is what it means when you see the label “FSC-certified wood”).
Like all our other laminate wood the Ipe belly wood comes selected and cut for bow making with sealed end grain, planed, thickness planed and with surfaces ready for gluing. The Indigenous peoples of the Amazon made hunting bows from the wood, which is the source of the common name pau d'arco, "bow stick"
Dimentions are 80"long, 1 3/8 wide by 1/4 - 3/8" deep. Perfect for a core with plenty of material for heavy bows or tappered.
